A generational story

A landmark since 1869

Built in 1869, the San Cataldo Lighthouse towers 66.4 meters above the homonymous peninsula, making it the third tallest lighthouse in Italy. For decades, its light, originally fueled by gas and now converted to electric, has guided ships to the safe harbor of Bari, becoming an iconic symbol of the city and an indispensable reference point for sailors.
Climbing the 380 steps that lead to the top of the lighthouse is an unforgettable experience. As you ascend, the view widens, offering breathtaking views that reward the effort. Upon reaching the summit, you find yourself surrounded by a unique spectacle: Bari stretches out at the foot of the lighthouse, with its historic quarters, bustling port, golden beaches, and, on particularly clear days, even the imposing silhouette of Castel del Monte on the horizon.
Despite its century-old history, the San Cataldo Lighthouse is equipped with the most modern technologies. The lighting system, once fueled by gas, has been converted to electric, and the lantern rotates thanks to a motor, ensuring maximum efficiency and nighttime visibility. However, the human presence remains essential for the proper functioning of the lighthouse. Experienced personnel take care of the daily maintenance and control of the systems, ensuring that the lighthouse’s light continues to shine like a beacon in the night, guiding and protecting sailors.
The San Cataldo Lighthouse is more than just a structure. It is a symbol of Bari, of its maritime history, and of its role as a gateway to Puglia. Its light, which cuts through the darkness of the sea, represents the hope, guidance, and tenacity of the people of Bari.
