History of the San Cataldo neighborhood

Development of the seaside village

The neighborhood of San Cataldo, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, claims its roots to Roman times. Traces of villas and rustic settlements from that period have been found during archaeological excavations, testifying to a rich and flourishing past.
The real development of San Cataldo as a seaside village took place in the Middle Ages. San Cataldo’s strategic position, overlooking the sea and located near the city of Bari, favored its development as an important center for fishing and maritime trade. The fishermen’s boats sailed the sea daily, supplying the city with fresh fish, while merchants traded with nearby and distant ports, contributing to the prosperity of the village.
A fundamental turning point for San Cataldo was the construction of the Lighthouse in 1869. This imposing structure, 66.4 meters high and composed of 380 steps, became not only a symbol of the neighborhood, but also an important reference for maritime navigation. Its light, which projected for 24 nautical miles, guided ships entering and leaving the port of Bari, ensuring the safety of sea voyages.
